Med/Surg ED Director

Meeker, CO
Reports to: Chief of Nursing (CNO)
FLSA Classification: Full-time, Exempt
The shared governance position for the Med Surg and Emergency Departments integrates core values and beliefs to achieve quality care, improve nurse engagement and increase nurse retention.  It is expected that this Director can comfortably manage the entire department, focusing on enhancing Med Surg skills, education, process, policy and procedures. 

Essential Functions
  • Actively participate in interviewing and hiring new personnel.
  • Provide objective staff evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Serve as a liaison between staff, physicians, Clinical Mangers, and CNO.
  • Encourage personal and professional growth among staff members.
  • Effectively respond to challenges in a positive manner and with a high degree of problem solving and cooperation.
  • Collaborate with the CNO, Clinical Manager, and staff to prepare annual departmental goals and objectives.
  • Establish a high standard of care
  • Ensure ongoing performance improvement processes and assures compliance with competency and Evidence Based Practice focusing in the Med Surg / Infusion Clinic aspects of the department and collaborating with ED/Trauma Director.
  • Advises medical staff, department heads, and hospital administrators in matters related to nursing services.
  • Implement staffing plan and provide direct patient care on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Coordinate new employee orientation, and work with HR to coordinate, recruit, and retain staff.
  • Develop and recommend Med Surg/Infusion Clinic/ED/Trauma operating and capital budgets with a focus on Med Surg/Infusion Clinic, ensuring department operates within those budgets.
  • Maintain HIPAA.
  • Design, implement, and continually evaluate deficiencies identified in surveys.
  • Regularly attend meetings and make recommendations for improvements in patient care.
  • Support nursing care standards through adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Manage policies and procedures related to Med Surg/Infusion Clinic with annual evaluations in collaboration with the ED/Trauma Director.
  • Assure compliance with all regulatory agencies.
  • Meet Conditions of Participation.
  • Establish, control, and maintain an adequate level of required supplies and equipment. Monitor, evaluate, and correct departmental equipment malfunctions or breakdowns, following proper facility procedures.
  • Consult with CNO and HR prior to implementing disciplinary actions.
  • Meet productivity expectations.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for nursing matters and represents the hospital with profession nursing and related organizations.
  • Oversee operations of Infusion Clinic and assure competency and Evidence Based Practice.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited nursing school required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • A current, unencumbered Colorado license required.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, TNCC and/or PALS required within six (6) months of hire or transferred.
  • Infusion Clinic Certification required within six (6) months of hire
  • One (1) year of ED/Critical Care experience required.
  • One (1) year of management experience preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of current nursing trends and practices.

  • May be required to wear N95s or PAPRs up to 80% of the shift.
